Iron and steel production

The production of pig iron and steel are essential sectors of heavy industry. Steel is an irreplaceable product with abundant applications in a wide range of industrial sectors including engineering, construction and the automotive industry.

Cemix's lime products are indispensable and widely used during all metallurgical processes.

Lime and limestone are added to the iron ore on the agglomeration belt during the pelletization of the feedstock. During the iron extraction process, slagging additives serve as a flux to lower the melting point of the iron ore and remove sulphur, phosphorus and other impurities from the iron ore. It takes 20 to 30 kilograms of lime and 100 to 200 kilograms of limestone to produce one tonne of pig iron.

Lime products also play a key role in the actual production of steel, again serving as a means of removing impurities and also creating a smooth surface for the final product. The products are also used to extend the life of refractory materials or in the production of chrome.

The blast furnace and steel slag can also be used as an artificial aggregate or filler in concrete production or in other industries. Cemix further processes the granulated slag and offers it to various construction sectors.
