SUSTAINABILITY AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Sustainability, respect for the environment and social responsibility are among the basic principles that guide LB Cemix, s.r.o. and the Kotouč Štramberk production plant in the mining and further processing of limestone.

To minimize the burden associated with the extraction of limestone and the production of limestone products, which play an irreplaceable role in many industries and everyday life, we use years of experience and the latest technologies and know-how.

We also contribute to environmental protection through our long-term business partners. We supply the environmental sector with over 30 percent of our total production volume.
Our products contribute to the environment
  • Limestone and lime products help heavy industry comply with strict air and water regulations.
  • Limestone helps cement and concrete plants reduce their carbon footprint.
  • Limestone is used in the desulphurization of power plants, heating plants and incinerators by cleaning harmful flue gases.
  • Limestone products help in the rehabilitation of uranium mines and in the reclamation of coal mines.
  • Lime products help in the treatment of industrial and drinking water.
  • Our products are environmentally friendly. In nature, limestone and its products are fully biodegradable.
  • We employ 200 workers and also take care of their family members. Work safety is a priority for us, as many of them work with heavy machinery or explosives when mining limestone.
Case studies

The state-owned company Diamo specialises in mitigating the consequences of uranium, ore and some coal mining activities. It focuses in particular on the removal of sulphuric acid, which has contaminated the underground soil and water around Stráž pod Ralskem in the Českolipsko region.

A neutralisation and decontamination station has been built on site to process the toxic substances in special reactors where the solutions are neutralised and precipitated. The resulting slurry is further processed to produce an insoluble precipitate, which is disposed of in a tailings pond. The treated water is discharged into the Ploučnice River.

Since the 1960s, a total of four million tonnes of sulphuric acid and other chemicals have been used in the chemical extraction of uranium, which must be disposed of in an environmentally sound manner.

In addition to sulphuric acid, other hazardous and toxic substances have been used in uranium mining and have contaminated the site. Diamo plans to remove all hazardous substances by 2037.

Cemix is an important partner for Diamo in the post-mining environmental clean-up. It supplies a product for the production of lime milk, which is used in processes to treat groundwater and sludge generated during mining and the subsequent processing of the extracted minerals.
