The use of lime is essential for the paper industry. It is used in many steps of the entire production process, from recycling sodium hydroxide during the pulping process, to water treatment and wastewater treatment. The industry's key raw material is precipitated calcium carbonate, PCC, which ensures, among other things, the quality of the resulting paper.
In the case of caustication during pulp production, sodium hydroxide is regenerated from sodium carbonate. Sodium carbonate is mixed with slaked lime and the chemical reaction produces calcium carbonate and sodium hydroxide.
Calcium carbonate is the most widely used dye for coated paper in the European paper industry. Depending on its origin, it has a whiteness of 84 to 96 per cent. The particle diameter and grain size distribution of precipitated calcium carbonate can be precisely adjusted during the crystallisation process. PCC is also used in paper pulp for the production of cigarette paper or thin printing paper.
Paper production has a high water consumption. This also implies high demands on the quality of the water used and consequently on the treatment of the waste water.
Lime is also necessary for the production of PCC (precipitated calcium carbonate, which is used not only in the paper industry). Calcium oxide is mixed with water to form lime milk, to which carbon dioxide gas is added. The chemical reaction produces PCC, which is mainly used as a filler in papermaking or as a pigment for paint. It increases the whiteness, opacity and smoothness of the paper. It also increases its volume, stiffness and strength. It improves printability and lightfastness.
